Wilton Expects Focus

It may have been a mixed week for the weather but nothing can dampen the spirits of the children at the Academy!

There was plenty of learning and hard work done during the week. Year 5/6 had a visit about the Power of Women and let’s not forget our amazing Macmillan Coffee afternoon (More on that down below).

The Assembly theme was about Macmillan and the hard work they do for those with cancer and their families. The character focus was on Caring and Compassion.

Next week sees the start of Black History Month and the impact it has had on the world and today’s society. The character focus is on Reflection and Determination.

A Message about Attendance

We have noticed an increase in children arriving late this week. This has an impact on learning and also socially, as children do not like walking into the classroom late when everybody has started.

8.30am Gates open
8.35am Staff come outside and lines begin to go in.
8.40am. School starts. Arrival after this time is classed as late.
8.41 am- 9.10am Children receive a late mark in the register. L code
9.11am onwards – Children receive a U code which classes the lateness as an unauthorised half day absence. This will affect  their attendance percentage.

We appreciate at times lateness may be due to a medical appointment. If medical evidence is seen, an  M-code is used instead of a U code.  This will authorise the absence, although the attendance percentage will still be affected.

Any 5 days of unauthorised absence in a 10 week rolling period will trigger a phone call and the start of involvement from the attendance team across Wilton and Dormanstown. 

This can be combination of U-codes or full day absence.

From Monday, you will receive a weekly text message from the Department of Education stating how  many days absence your child has had this year. Please keep this to times your child is genuinely too ill to come to school.

Please help your child have the best start to the day by being on time. If you need any support or have  any questions then please contact the Academy to discuss it.

Class Dojo

Don’t forget to see reminders and stories about what your child is learning in school from Class Dojo.

It also shows parents/carers what the children have been getting points for, including being on time, working hard during class and good manners to teachers and their friends.

Parking around the School

Please could we remind you that parking outside of the school on Pasture Lane is not permitted. On the school side, this is clearly marked out as a no parking zone. This applies on a morning, home time and throughout the day.  Parking on the other side blocks the road and it makes it difficult for cars to pass and makes it unsafe for children. If you need to drive to school, please park on the High Street,  the Grange Estate or further round Pasture Lane to ensure the road and paths around the school grounds are clear and safe for adults and children. 

Year 3/4 Miss Norton Class Round Up

Year 3 and 4 have had a fantastic start to the academic year and have settled into new routines excellently!

In writing, we began by exploring word classes and being able to name and give characteristics about the different words. We have more recently started our fairy-tale topic and have been using our knowledge of word classes to create interesting sentences which have even included FANBOYS and fronted adverbials.

In reading, we read a text about the jungle and the rainforest to establish routines and expectations and we are now reading Jack and the Baked Beanstalk and are excited to find out about Jack’s adventure.

In maths, we have spent lots of time learning our 3’s, 4’s and now our 9 times tables, any help with these at home would also help. We have also focused on place value, thinking about the value of digits and what they represent. We have also been adding and subtracting 1’s, 10’s, 100’s and even 1000’s to numbers and thinking about the numbers may change. 

In art, we have been learning about Lowry and have been exploring how he uses colour, geometric shapes and people in his pictures and we will be using similar techniques based on our pictures of the local area. 

In music, we have been introduced to recorders and can now hold a recorder correctly and keep the beat with a single note. 

In computing, our current project is creating a presentation about ourselves, which needs to include links to other pages, images and even a table with data!

In P.E, we began by practicing our running skills, technique and stamina in order to run at the cross-country event and we have started learning about symmetry in dance routines, which we will continue this half term.

Macmillan Coffee Afternoon

We would like to thank everyone who came and gave some amazing home made cakes and donated towards Macmillan Charity.

Breakfast Club

Did you know we do a breakfast club every morning?

You can bring your child in, knowing they’ll get a good breakfast before they start school. This is open to everyone and can be booked in the clubs section on the school gateway app.

It costs £1.20 for each morning your child attends.

Attendance

Attendance every day is vital for your child’s progress unless they are too unwell to learn. It is your responsibility to inform the academy if your child is going to be absent by 8.40am each day of their absence.

Please note if your child is later than 9.10am, it is counted by the DfE as a half day absence.

Missed Learning

1.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 74 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week, which is OUTSTANDING!!

Nut Free Academy

A reminder to all parents we are a Nut Free Academy, please read below.

School Uniform and PE days

Please make sure that all items of clothing, including coats and packed lunch bags are clearly labelled with children’s names, so it is easy to find their owners.

All children have been provided with a t-shirt and shorts in a bag for PE lessons but they need to have their own trainers/plimsols in school please. Plimsols will be provided if needed. As the weather is changing, you may want to send in a tracksuit for children to wear outside during PE lessons.
