Through a high-quality English curriculum, we support children in developing the knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively, embedding each granular step into children’s long term memories to ensure they can access and retrieve prior learning as they develop. Reading, Writing and Spoken Language are crucial in the acquisition of knowledge in all areas of the curriculum. Children develop their use, knowledge and understanding within a broad and balanced curriculum, with opportunities to identify and build on prior knowledge within a sequence of learning. Through a focus on children’s oracy skills, we ensure children can communicate, debate and disagree in a refined, respectful manner and bring high levels of speaking into all areas of school life.

We provide sequential, differentiated and well-resourced lessons, allowing all pupils to receive high quality teaching and appropriate support in order for them to reach their full potential in English. Clear learning objectives and success criteria make it explicit to the children the new knowledge they are learning about. Learning environments including working walls, key vocabulary and quality resources are a feature in every classroom and are effective to support the learning during lessons.

From Nursery to Y2 synthetic phonics is taught through the Read Write Inc. programme. This scheme ensures a structured and inclusive approach, starting with individual or ‘pure’ sounds, progressing through to sound blending to allow children to read and write words independently.  Read Write Inc. teaching allow all children to learn to read fluently so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.
