We’re back!!
What a first week it has been, the weather is finally warming up, although it rained today, the children are working hard and having a lot of fun too.
We’ve heard lots of stories about what children have been up to over the half-term week and everyone is refreshed ready to go again.
Thursday was World Book Day and the children dressed up, either, as their favourite book characters or came in their pajamas, even some of the teachers dressed up too.
The character focus was week was Kindness and Compassion.
Next week the assembly theme is on National Careers Week, the Character focus in Helpfulness and Determination.
8.30am Gates open
8.35am Staff come outside and lines begin to go in.
8.40am. School starts. Arrival after this time is classed as late.
8.41 am- 9.10am Children receive a late mark in the register. L code
9.11am onwards -Children receive a U code which classes the lateness as an unauthorised half day absence. This will affect their attendance percentage.
We appreciate at times lateness may be due to a medical appointment. If medical evidence is seen, an M-code is used instead of a U code. This will authorise the absence, although the attendance percentage will still be affected.
Any 5 days of unauthorised absence in a 10 week rolling period will trigger a phone call and the start of involvement from the attendance team across Wilton and Dormanstown.
This can be combination of U-codes or full day absence.
From Monday, you will receive a weekly text message from the Department of Education stating how many days absence your child has had this year. Please keep this to times your child is genuinely too ill to come to school.
Please help your child have the best start to the day by being on time. If you need any support or have any questions then please contact the Academy to discuss it.
Don’t forget to see reminders and stories about what your child is learning in school from Class Dojo.
It also shows parents/carers what the children have been getting points for, including being on time, working hard during class and good manners to teachers and their friends.
Please could we remind you that parking outside of the school on Pasture Lane is not permitted. On the school side, this is clearly marked out as a no parking zone. This applies on a morning, home time and throughout the day. Parking on the other side blocks the road and it makes it difficult for cars to pass and makes it unsafe for children. If you need to drive to school, please park on the High Street, the Grange Estate or further round Pasture Lane to ensure the road and paths around the school grounds are clear and safe for adults and children.
Did you know we do a breakfast club every morning?
You can bring your child in, knowing they’ll get a good breakfast before they start school. This is open to everyone and can be booked in the clubs section on the school gateway app.
It costs £1.20 for each morning your child attends.
Attendance every day is vital for your child’s progress unless they are too unwell to learn. It is your responsibility to inform the academy if your child is going to be absent by 8.40am each day of their absence.
Please note if your child is later than 9.10am, it is counted by the DfE as a half day absence.
You can contact the office on 01642 453374.
This weeks best attendance goes to…..

Year 5/6 have been working hard over the last few weeks.
In RE we have been looking at Sikhism. We have looked at the origins of this comparatively young religion and the children have been comparing it with another religion. We looked at ways Sikhs celebrate and how they view religion as a whole.
In Science we had a fantastic visit to the Life Centre in Newcastle. The children were exceptionally well behaved and had fantastic opportunities to study different aspects of working within the Space Industry.
We have just started our History Topic on King Henry VIII – the children appear very interested in many aspects of this monarch’s life and some are challenging me with my own knowledge!!
Finally, we are continuing our movement breaks – the children enjoy the chance to get up and move between lessons and I’m sure with the weather improving, these will be even more popular.
Our Lunches are served on a 3 week rota. The menu next week will be Week 1
If you provide a packed lunch for your child please can we remind you of the following information:
All the above information is to ensure children have a healthy packed lunch whilst taking into account the safety of themselves and others.

The Assembly theme this week was on British Values and how important they are to each of us. The character focus was on Co-operation and Collaboration.
After Half-term it’s World Book Day and we’ll all learn about the children’s, and teachers, favourite authors and stories. The Character focus is on Kindness and Compassion.

A huge WELL DONE to you all.
Can you get 100% next week?
This half term, year 3 / 4 have worked extremely hard in all areas of the curriculum.
In writing we have written a recount about a school trip we have previously been on, with some added details for humour. A Kenning Poem, whereby teachers were asked to guess the animal they had written about. Finally, we have created a mystery story, each of our stories have been different and have a different ending and a picture has been created digitally to represent what we have written about.
In reading, we have read some Kenning Poems and loved guessing what they were talking about and the children even asked myself to find and read some more so they could guess what they were describing. We have also read ‘Krindlekrax’ and have thoroughly enjoyed the story learning about the life of Ruskin Splinter and how he overcome his fears to be the real hero at the end of the story with some sad elements along the way!
In maths, we have re-visited place value and calculations, and we are currently focusing on statistics, whereby we need to read and interpret information in tables and use the information to draw conclusions.
In geography, we have learned about rivers, the journey they take from source to mouth, famous world rivers, where they located and some interesting facts about them. Furthermore, why rivers were and are so important and finally why it is important to look after them for future ecosystems.
In R.E, we are learning about Christianity, we have started learning about the Annunciation when Mary found out she was going to give birth Jesus and now we are learning about Advent, the time leading up to Jesus’ birth. We will continue learning about Christianity after half term too.
We have also enjoyed our time at Boggle Hole and we can’t wait to share all of the photos and tell you all about it, in our assembly next half term!
Our Lunches are served on a 3 week rota. The menu next week will be Week 3 after Half term.

There has been so much happening since we came back in January and we’re still only about half-way through the Academic year.
We had 2 children lucky enough to be chosen to go see King Charles and Queen Camilla during their visit on Thursday, they even got to talk to the King.
The Assembly theme this week was on Safer Internet day and how to stay safe online and the character focus was on Independence.
Next week is going to be a very busy week for Year 3/4 so we look forward to seeing what they have to say.

Year 1/2 have all been trying hard in their lessons this half term!
As part of our reading and writing, we have been learning about instructions. To begin with, we made paper aero planes and following this we produced a set of instructions on how we did this.
In Maths, we have focused on multiplication and division and as part of this we have been counting in our 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We have really enjoyed listening and singing the songs!
We’ve looked at materials in science, and the different characteristics they have and then grouped them according to their properties. We had a lot of fun with the experiments!
We have enjoyed learning about Queen Elizabeth II, her duties as queen, her coronation and some of the personal aspects to her life a spart of our topic work.
In music, we have been learning to play some musical instruments to a Samba beat with Mr Nixon and he is proud of the progress we are making.
Recently we celebrated Chinese New Year in Class, the children did a traditional Dragon Dance and tried some delicious food.

Year 5/6 have had a very busy few weeks.
In Art, we have studied the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and how he incorporated his heritage into his self-portraits. We first practiced sketching an accurate self-portrait, researched our individual heritage and then understanding we would be unable to recreate the accuracy of our self-portraits using oil paints, we thought about what features would make us stand out as us.
In Spelling, we have started using our ‘spelling voice’ to help us decode more complex words and spelling rules. We have also started looking at the roots of words to help us investigate the meanings of words which are unfamiliar to us.
In Geography, we have revisited Biomes and have begun to look at the way different eco-systems survive and thrive in different climates.
We have just started our Science topic of Space. The children have begun to complete their Space Explorer Passports and we are looking forward to the opportunity to visit the Life Science Centre as well as a visit from the mobile Planetarium on Monday. Hopefully, the children will have lots of exciting knowledge to share with you.
Finally, we are trialing a 2-3 minutes ‘movement break’ between lessons. This has been shown to improve not only the physical health of children but also their mental health and ability to concentrate. The children already appear to be enjoying this and I have noticed an increase in their attention. We will continue this to the end of term.
Attendance every day is vital for your child’s progress unless they are too unwell to learn. It is your responsibility to inform the academy if your child is going to be absent by 8.40am each day of their absence.

Our Assembly theme this week was about Big Energy Saving Week and how turning off a light or turning down the volume just a little bit, can make a difference. The character focus was on Helpfulness and Collaboration.
Next week the Assembly theme will be on British Values and what they mean. Character focus is on Caring and Compassion.
We hope everyone stays safe this weekend with Storm Éowyn arriving in the UK.
It costs £1.20 for each morning your child attends and will resume in the new year.
In writing, this half term we have written a recount about a school trip we have been on. We may have included some little things that didn’t happen, but this was to engage our reader and hopefully make them laugh. We have now moved onto writing a Kenning Poem based on Mr Linden’s Library and we are trying to make this sound a little creepy!
In reading, we have been reading Diary of a Killer Cat, and we have found it hilarious. Tuffy the main character gets up to lots of mischief, but we know it wasn’t his fault. He was just the cat and that’s what cats are supposed to do.
In maths, we have re-visited place value. The children were able to apply their previous knowledge of these and deepen their understanding further delving into reasoning and problem-solving style questions.
In science, we have started our topic on ‘Forces’ and last week we discovered that the two main forces are pushes and pulls and we explored different areas of the school investigating different pushes and pulls.
We have also begun a new art topic and the artist that we are currently studying is Guiseppe Arcimboldo an Italian artist who used objects, such as fruits, books and even fish to adorn portraits with.
We have also been discussing ways in which we can look after our mental health which includes are well-being. We have talked about the things that we enjoy doing to help us feel relaxed and calm and discussed how these can help with help with our emotions too.
In French, the children have been learning common phrases to ask how someone is feeling and ways in which they can reply. They have been doing super bien!

2.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

Year 1/2 have been working hard since returning to school.
We have been looking at The Owl Who Was Afraid of The Dark. We talked about how the character went on a quest which led him to liking the dark.
We focused on the main character and setting and discussed adjectives that best described them. Then we have loved reading the story and we are now writing our own versions of the story.
In Maths, we have been focusing on place value and then multiplication which we have enjoyed mastering!
For topic, our focus has been learning all about the Earth, including the seas and rivers and we have loved singing a song all about the continents!

Full detailsIt’s been an VERY busy week at the Academy and we still have one week before Christmas!!
On Tuesday the whole Academy attended St Cuthbert’s Church for the Christmas service, with our EYFS and Year 1/2 in their Nativity costumes.
Then on Wednesday we held our Christingle service in school with all the children looking proud with their Christingle oranges.
Thursday was Christmas Jumper day, the children looked amazing in all their Christmas jumpers and outfits and got to have an amazing lunch prepared by our Kitchen staff. Later on we had our Christmas Fayre and we want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came along.
Last, but by no means least, this morning our EYFS and Year 1/2 classes performed their Baarmy Bethlehem Nativity show and they were all amazing!
Next week is the final week of school before Christmas and maybe things will be calmer, we will have to wait and see.
