End of Year Blog

Wilton Expects Focus

It’s finally here, doesn’t feel that long ago when the School year started, yet here we are at the end.

Every single child has worked so hard across the entire year, making new children feel welcomed, missing friends who had to go and enjoying everything that has happened over the last 11 months.

There is so much that happened, but rather than discuss it this link will lead you to all the previous blogs, so you can look back over what an amazing year it’s been.

That’s not to say this week has been uneventful, far from it.

On Monday our Reception class got to say goodbye to Mrs Wardle, Miss Byrne and Mrs Matthews as they prepare to move up to Year 1 and new teacher Mrs Swann.

Tuesday it was the turn of our Year 6 children and safe to say that tears were shed, while they told their friends and family what they would like to be when they grow up and what they loved about being at Wilton Academy.

Later on they went to Level X in Middlesbrough and had a lot of fun with Go-karts, bumper cars, mini golf and bowling! We’ll miss our Year 6 class of 2025 and we wish them the best going forward to Secondary School.

Wednesday morning started off with our friends from Go Well bringing in Frisbees for children for all ages, which all the children enjoyed immensely.

And let’s not forget the Colour run that happened on Wednesday afternoon…..

And they’re off…..

All the children got covered in paint, even the teachers and parents couldn’t escape getting covered…

We want to thank all our families for supporting us through the year and we want to wish everyone a very happy summer and we’ll see you in September.

This can be combination of U-codes or full day absence.

From Monday, you will receive a weekly text message from the Department of Education stating how  many days absence your child has had this year. Please keep this to times your child is genuinely too ill to come to school.

Class Dojo

Don’t forget to see reminders and stories about what your child is learning in school from Class Dojo.

It also shows parents/carers what the children have been getting points for, including being on time, working hard during class and good manners to teachers and their friends.

Parking around the School

Please could we remind you that parking outside of the school on Pasture Lane is not permitted. On the school side, this is clearly marked out as a no parking zone. This applies on a morning, home time and throughout the day.  Parking on the other side blocks the road and it makes it difficult for cars to pass and makes it unsafe for children. If you need to drive to school, please park on the High Street,  the Grange Estate or further round Pasture Lane to ensure the road and paths around the school grounds are clear and safe for adults and children.

Breakfast Club

Did you know we do a breakfast club every morning?

You can bring your child in, knowing they’ll get a good breakfast before they start school. This is open to everyone and can be booked in the clubs section on the school gateway app.

It costs £1.20 for each morning your child attends and is every day when we return on Tuesday 2nd September.

Attendance

Attendance every day is vital for your child’s progress unless they are too unwell to learn. It is your responsibility to inform the academy if your child is going to be absent by 8.40am each day of their absence.

Please note if your child is later than 9.10am, it is counted by the DfE as a half day absence.

You can contact the office on 01642 453374.

The class with the best attendance the Final week is……….

Missed Learning

15 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

This week we had 69 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week, which is Amazing!!!

Kooth Summer Support

As summer approaches, many young people lose access to the structure and support they get during term time. That can mean more time spent alone or online, and not always in the healthiest ways.
Which is why our friends at Kooth are hosting a 30 minute webinar for parents, covering young people’s use of the internet, social media and smartphones exploring how parents and carers can support them to stay safe.
You can access the webinar at the following link on Wednesday 23rd July at 6pm.

Wilton Expects Focus

Just one week left until the Summer Holidays, but whose counting?

The children have had a great time, and great weather this week, including today when they got to experience a day in their new class in September.

Our EYFS group visited Kirkleatham Museum on Wednesday and had great time, enjoying every moment of it.

Our Year 6 students have been out on Transition in their new Secondary schools, getting a taste of what’s to come in September, but they also found time to make a smashing 3 course meal for their parents on Thursday, it looked and tasted delicious!

The Assembly theme this week was about Emmeline Pankhurst and her role in British Democracy. The Character focus was on Co-operation and Determination.

There is no Assembly theme or Character focus next week, as the children will be taking part in the Colour Run on Wednesday 17th July. We invite our parents to come and join us in the fun.

Year 1/2 Mrs Barron Class Round Up

Since the last blog the children have enjoyed a few visits to extend their learning. We have been finding out about local hero, Captain Cook. The children really enjoyed the fact that he was born in a village close to here and this built a lot more onto our learning in Autumn around how our area has changed over the last 200 years naming lots of the places and Geographical features of our area.

As part of the history topic on Cook we visited Hartlepool Maritime Museum to find out more about life on a sailing ship like the Endeavour. We were blessed with a lovely day and the children got to explore the ship from top to bottom. They were very engaged and asked lots of interesting questions of our guide.  We spent most of the day there and after lunch we got to explore the replica shops and homes from the time.  The most fun was had in the Horrible Histories Installation where the children took pleasure in firing sponge balls from an air cannon, mainly at the adults.

Last week the children visited Locke Park, however, we weren’t that lucky with the weather. The Sports Leaders from Rye Hills had set out a story trail using parts of Stickman, The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom.  The leaders read part of the story and then there was an activity to go with it. Despite the rain the children had a fantastic time running around, problem solving and collaborating before rain stopped play and we had to return to school. No one really minded being wet to the bone.

Only two weeks now remain in the School year. Where has the time gone?

The weather can’t seem to make it’s mind up (Maybe it doesn’t want the school year to end?) but the children are still working hard and getting ready to move up to their next class. Some of our Year 6 children have already experienced a transition day and we can’t wait to hear their stories.

On Tuesday the children took part in Quad sports, doing various activities and having a lot of fun while doing it.

Wednesday saw our Year 1/2 class head out for the Super Story Trail at Locke Park in Redcar, although the weather did have a say in it as well.

Thursday our Diamond Standards award winners gathered with children from the choir to celebrate all the winners across the entire Trust from throughout the year and we celebrate each and every one of them.

The Assembly theme this week was about the Anniversary of the NHS and it’s vital role in keeping Britain healthy. The Character focus was on Courage and Compassion.

Next week the Assembly theme will be about Emmeline Pankhurst and her role in British Democracy. The character focus will be on Co-operation and Determination.

EYFS Mrs Wardle Class Round Up

Early years have had an exciting few weeks. We have carried on our learning about minibeasts and had a visit from the Owl Centre.

The session was filled with excitement and wonder as the children came face-to-face with a variety of amazing animals, including a barn owl, a hedgehog, corn snake, a tarantula, and a duck! The children enjoyed feeding the duck sweetcorn and letting the snake sniff their shoes to see if they would make a tasty meal!

We have made the most of the lovely weather, taking our learning outside and also having a water play morning. All the children enjoyed washing the cars and the babies and playing with the water beads, but most of all getting soaked!

We still have lots of exciting things happening during the last two weeks and are looking forward to our trip next week.

Wilton Expects Focus

What an entertaining week it has been here at Wilton. There’s not long left until the end of the School year and there is still so much happening.

The big news this week is of course, the children’s performance of Shrek the Musical, but more about that show later.

Next week it is the Diamon Standard awards for the 24/25 winners and Year 1/2 are going on a Super Story Trail, but more about that in a couple of weeks.

The Assembly theme this was about School Diversity week and how we should be tolerant of those with different faiths and beliefs to our own. The character focus was on Reflection and Collaboration.

Next week we celebrate the Anniversary of the NHS and it’s importance to British health. The character focus will be on Courage and Compassion.

Shrek the Musical

On Wednesday children from across all 5 schools of the Tees Valley Education Trust came together and put on a performance of Shrek the Musical.

Every single child worked very hard and they put on a show that everyone had fun doing and everyone who saw the show hugely enjoyed. We’re so proud of all our children at Wilton and their contributions to the show.

The class with the best attendance this week is……….

Missed Learning

2 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 60 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week, which is Fantastic!!!

A huge WELL DONE to you all.

Can you get 100% next week?

Year 5/6 Mrs Harding Class Round Up

Year 5/6 have been very busy since we came back from half-term. Starting off with a continuation from last half-term of a Dynamo Cricket day at Ormesby Cricket Club. Despite the rain, hail (!) and even some sunshine, we did have a great time and all the children behaved fantastically (as ever).

As part of our learning into Joe Cornish, we took a trip to Redcar Beach. Even with the tide coming in the children managed to get some great shots.

With the end of the School year fast approaching, the Year 6 children will be heading off to their new schools soon for transition time, to see how life will be in Secondary school.

And don’t forget in two weeks time we would like to invite parents to try a meal that the children created following the recipe.

Diary Dates and Reminders

Lunch Menu

Our lunches are served on a 3 week rotation, next week will be week 2.

Reminder about Packed Lunches

If you provide a packed lunch for your child please can we remind you of the following information:

  • Grapes should be cut up into halves or quarters to reduce choking risk.
  • Bars of chocolate and bags of sweets are not allowed.
  • Chocolate biscuits are acceptable.
  • Chocolate spread should be of a nut free variety.

All the above information is to ensure children have a healthy packed lunch whilst taking into account the safety of themselves and others.

Below is a reminder of the Nut Free school policy for the school.

What an amazing week it has been at Wilton Primary. Shrek Rehearsals are almost done (See below) and the children sound amazing as they always do, singing and performing and their costumes look fantastic!

Two of our students from Mrs Hardings class took part in naming of Discovery Academy and represented the school with pride.

EYFS had a visit from friends at Kirkleatham Owl museum on Wednesday. They met an owl, duck and other creatures of all shapes and sizes.

The Assembly theme this week was on Individual Liberty and how important it is as a core British value. The character theme was on Caring and Independence.

Next week it is School Diversity Week and learning about the tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, the character focus is on Reflection and Collaboration.

With the heat showing up along with the blazing sun we do ask if your child has a hat/cap that they bring it in, we have plenty of school hats for any who need them.

Shrek the Musical

It’s next week(!!!) and just a few tickets are still available for Shrek the Musical for the 1pm show, performed by the children of the Tees Valley Trust, scan the QR code below or follow the link to book yours!

A Message about Attendance

8.30am Gates open
8.35am Staff come outside and lines begin to go in.
8.40am. School starts. Arrival after this time is classed as late.
8.41 am- 9.10am Children receive a late mark in the register. L code
9.11am onwards -Children receive a U code which classes the lateness as an unauthorised half day absence. This will affect  their attendance percentage.

We appreciate at times lateness may be due to a medical appointment. If medical evidence is seen, an  M-code is used instead of a U code.  This will authorise the absence, although the attendance percentage will still be affected.

Any 5 days of unauthorised absence in a 10 week rolling period will trigger a phone call and the start of involvement from the attendance team across Wilton and Dormanstown.

This can be combination of U-codes or full day absence.

From Monday, you will receive a weekly text message from the Department of Education stating how  many days absence your child has had this year. Please keep this to times your child is genuinely too ill to come to school.

Please help your child have the best start to the day by being on time. If you need any support or have  any questions then please contact the Academy to discuss it.

It costs £1.20 for each morning your child attends and is every day.

Second week in a row we have TWO classes taking best attendance this week……….

Missed Learning

1 day of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 73 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week, which is Awesome!!!

A huge WELL DONE to you all.

Can you get 100% next week?

Year 3/4 Miss Norton Class Round Up

Although last half term was rather short, it was still a busy half term.

All children completed their pedestrian safety and are now able to cross the road safely, know where to cross the road and identify safer places to cross the road!

In English, we wrote letters to persuade Mrs Hood to get different things for our school, some even included electric scooters and a class pet for each classroom. We then moved on to writing Greek myths and legends and the children enjoyed creating their own creature to go in the story, planning and then writing their story.

In reading, we read persuasive letters and moved onto Greek Myths, during this time we had some very good discussions about the Greek Myths and also how some of the Gods got their own way and others were left out. Looking at various texts, we discussed similarities we find in many Greek Myths and Legends and looked for them in in new texts.

In maths, we continued our work on place value and many of us are very secure with our number knowledge and are able to compare, order and even round numbers to the nearest whole number. We then moved on to calculations and we have secured our knowledge of calculations and are able to apply our skills to multi-step problems. The year 4 children also have had a big focus on their times tables, as this half term the children have completed their official times table check and I am very proud of how well all year 4 conducted themselves and the effort they put into this.

As part of our history work, we have been learning about the Ancient Mayans, we have learned many interesting things about them including where they lived, how they lived, about their religions and how we are still able to know about them today because of the evidence they left behind.

In PSHE, we have focused on appropriate places of touch, the importance of sleep and how this affects our mental health and also about being kind and honest. We discussed how it is ok to make mistakes, but it is necessary to be honest about what we have done and then how we can learn from what we have done wrong.

Lots of children in the class have also been attending Shrek rehearsals and the children who are not in the performance have been learning about our world and why it needs looking after.

Year 1/2 Mrs Barron Class Round Up

Year 1/2 have been very busy as usual.  In science, the year 1 topic has been learning How animals can be compared.  The children have been looking at different animal groups and how we can categorise them.  While year 2 have been looking at How the characteristics of plants and animals suit their habitats.  We had a great time exploring out in our nature garden looking for micro habitats and discussing the different species we would find in there.

With the lovely weather the children have enjoyed lots of time outside, especially at lunch time with the introduction of an outdoor speaker.  The girls have really enjoyed dancing and singing to the music played on the iPad .

We have had a few visits now from Mrs Kell (Executive Head) and the therapy dog, Arlo. The children really look forward to seeing him around the academy.

In maths the children have been consolidating their skills in the four operations and applying their knowledge to problem solving .  They have been showing real determination to read carefully and decide what they need to do to solve the problem.

In Writing the children have been focussed on Myth and Legends with lots of debates and discussions on the Loch Ness Monster.  They created their own legendary story creating interest and suspense for the reader.

We have begun our History topic on local hero, Captain James Cook.  Finding out about his birthplace and why he is important to local culture.  We were able to use knowledge of our environment and local area to discuss his journey on the River Tyne and the River Thames hauling coal.

This week we have been off to Hartlepool Maritime museum to find out more about life on a ship like the Endeavour. The children had an amazing time being on the ship and learning about Captain Cook.

Wilton Expects Focus

You can tell it’s the first week back after Half-Term because the weather has been all over the place. But come rain or shine, the children continue to work hard and show their teachers how Wilton works for them.

The week started out with a full cast rehearsal, including the choir, on Tuesday afternoon and it was great to see how far children from across the entire trust have come since rehearsals started.

Wednesday Year 5/6 visited Normanby Cricket Club to take part in Dynamo cricket. They definitely got a real taste for cricket, including the rain, which stopped play. That didn’t stop them having fun though.

The Assembly theme this week was on World Environment and World Ocean’s day and how important they are to our planet. The character focus was on Kindness and Compassion.

Next week is Healthy Eating Week, the character focus is on Helpfulness and Determination.

Mrs Wardle EYFS Class Round Up

Before half term, Early Years were very surprised when they found a fairy door attached to our tree! We had been reading the story Ali and the Fairy Door, so the children decided it must be a magical door to where the fairy Ziggy lived.

They wrote her letters and notes asking her questions and left them at the door. They also made wands and potions. Ziggy replied answering there questions and left them some cupcakes to decorate. This week we have started our learning about minibeasts.

We have looked at bees, discovered how they make honey and tried some honey on toast. The children have been hunting for minibeasts everywhere and have found some unusual ones that we have been learning the names of.

We are looking forward to our minibeast visit and trip in the next few weeks.

Half Term Blog 23rd May

Wilton Expects Focus

And with that another half term has come and gone, that was quick, wasn’t it?

The children, as ever, worked their absolute socks off over the past few weeks and while the weather may have changed every day, the focus of the children always remained on their work.

The Year 3/4 children finished off their pedestrian training and the Choir get better every single day getting ready for Shrek.

The assembly theme this week was about Walk to School Week and the character focus was Caring and Compassion.

We hope everyone has an amazing half-term week and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 2nd June.

Shrek the Musical

Tickets are still available for Shrek the Musical, performed by the children of the Tees Valley Trust, scan the QR code below or follow the link to book yours!

It costs £1.20 for each morning your child attends and is every day.

This weeks best attendance goes to…..

Missed Learning

17 day of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 59 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week, which is Fantastic!!

A huge WELL DONE to you all.

Can you get 100% when we return?

Year 5/6 Mrs Harding Class Round Up

It’s been a very busy half term for the children, starting with swimming when they came back after the Easter break. Lots of progress was made across the class and everyone did really well.

Last week the children also got to take part in a cricket day, taking advantage of the great weather, while it lasted.

Last week was also SATs week and all of the Year 6 children did so well, I am so very proud of each and every one of them for the hard work they’ve been putting in, to prepare and be ready for this and the resolve to get through their exams. I am also very proud of Year 5 for their support and consideration for their friends during the week as well.

We also had our friends from Go Well come in and let the children become Gladiators for the morning, trying out lots of physical challenges and having fun.

Today the Year 6 children had their special SATs lunch with a menu of their own choice and it went down an absolute storm!

On Tuesday, we had a visit from Steve who was helping us research the Geography and History of Eston Hills and the community surrounding it.

The children learned how the population of this area changed from approx 200 people to 5,500 due to the mining by Bolckow, Vaughan & Co Ltd. Children enjoyed learning about the geography and history of Eston including the mining and steelworks.

Wilton Expects Focus

Another week done at the school and what can I say but how proud we all are about how hard all the children have worked this last week.

All the children and teachers were supporting our Year 6 children as they took their SATs exams this week and we are proud of every single one of them.

The Shrek Rehearsals are picking up pace with lots more practice to come before the big show in just over a months time!

The assembly theme this week was about Mental Health Awareness weeks theme of ‘Community’, the character focus was on Helpfulness and Collaboration.

For the final week of this very brief half term, it’s Walk to School Week, so let’s get those steps in! The character focus will be on Caring and Compassion.

Year 3/4 Miss Norton Class Round Up

This term, although it has been very short, year 3/4 have worked very had once again.

The term began with us going swimming, the children all made excellent progress and it was wonderful to see some children reach their first goal and others stretch themselves even further.

In writing, we began writing a non-chronological report about the Ancient Egyptians. The children were able to compile all of their knowledge of our previous history project into a fantastic piece of writing. We are now writing a persuasive letter to Mrs Hood to persuade her to get things for our school. Hopefully, our persuasive writing will work!

In reading, we have been reading a report about the Mayans and we have retrieved information about them and this will support us in our future learning. We also learned lots of information about them because of what they left behind for archaeologists to discover. We are now reading, Bird Song and the children can’t wait to find out what the tragedy maybe in the book.

In maths, we have continued our learning about measures, we have learned about length, height, weight and capacity. We have been able o convert between different units of measurement, compare different measures and solve problems too.

In science, we finished our topic of forces and we have now moved onto our new topic about plants. We have started learning the parts of plants and why they are important to he life cycle of a plant.

In geography, we have been learning about mountains and how they are formed and what the water cycle is and why it is so important.

As part of our PSHE work, we have also discussed the importance of sleep. We have talked about why routines are important, not using screens before bed and what we can also drink to help us sleep better. We have further talked about the effects of a good nights sleep and how it can help us feel mentally better.

Wilton Expects Focus

It’s certainly been an interesting, if short, week at the Academy. The weather changing daily, let’s hope it stays bright and sunny for the rest of the School year. The children have been working hard, as ever, our Choir and cast members have been rehearsing very hard for the Shrek musical, tickets still on sale, and it’s going to be an amazing show.

The school celebrated VE day yesterday with a picnic lunch and lessons, making flags and learning about the importance of it in history.

Year 6 are preparing for their SATs which are next week, we wish them all the best of luck and we know they’ll do us all proud.

The assembly theme this week was about World Red Cross Day and the character theme was Kindness and Independence.

Next week is Metal Health Awareness week, with a special theme on ‘Community’, the character focus is Helpfulness and Collaboration.

Year 1/2 Mrs Barron Class Round Up

Yesterday was been a special and exciting day in our school. The children have been finding out all about the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a fabulous picnic outside. They have learnt lots of things about what VE Day was for and why it is important to celebrate it even after all this time.

Now we are back in school after the Easter break the children have got straight back into their new topics.

In maths we have been revisiting place value and are moving on to the four operations. The children are working hard with Y1 learning to count on with greater confidence and Year 2 working out missing numbers in addition calculations.

In English, the children have really enjoyed learning about the Legend of the Loch Ness Monster. There has been its of debate about whether the legend is true or whether it has been embellished down the years. To support our reading into writing rationale, Year 2 have also been reading the Legend of Robin Hood. Again, the children have been forming very strong opinions regarding the characters and their actions.

Our foundation topic is Geography, and the children have been learning about the difference between weather and climate. They have remembered the work they have done on continents and have place them on a globe. They have identified the equator on the globe and understand the climate zones. They know that the UK is in the continent of Europe and that its climate is temperate. Watch out for the next blog which may include a weather forecast or two.

As the weather has been so lovely the children are finding afternoons warm and need to calm after lunch so they have been finding out more about meditation and breath work.

Just before our half term break the children took part in an Easter walk around the village showing off their Easter bonnets.
